The Yorkshire and The Humber FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards held in early 2019 were a huge success.  We crowned 11 fantastic businesses of different shapes and sizes from across various sectors of the economy.  We had self-employed businesses showcase their talents alongside established larger businesses with up to 250 employees. The standard was fantastic and this year we hope to celebrate even more great businesses.

The Afghan Rug Shop
RAF veteran, James Wilthew, befriended a local rug dealer during a military tour of Northern Afghanistan in 2003. Twelve years on and after months of research, James succeeded in tracking down his old friend, they reunited online and The Afghan Rug Shop was born. With a high street shop and online store - they remain the only shop outside Afghanistan anywhere in the world purely selling Fairtrade Afghan rugs and kilims, importing direct from the Afghan weavers’ markets to their door. They are Living Wage employers, employ 4 staff and directly support hundreds of Afghan weavers and their families.

m2r Education, owned by Munir Mamujee, are a multi award winning, international education recruitment firm. Offering high quality services across the sector through two distinct divisions, one focusing on teacher recruitment and the other on the education technology sector. They currently operate across 30+ countries in MENA, ASEAN and Europe. The office is based in Wakefield where they employ five FTE, plus additional Associates based in the UK and overseas and a partner company in Abu Dhabi. Collingwood Learning
Five years ago Collingwood Learning was a small theatre company based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Now Collingwood is an international educational consultancy with projects and clients in 25 countries delivering £2m in contracted work, educating 500,000 young people per year. This is set to accelerate to reach 1.5m young people next year. Collingwood's flagship education programme, The Smashed Project, uses educational theatre as a learning tool to educate young people on alcohol misuse. Collingwood have created a unique programme for corporate sponsorship with an equally innovative 'creative franchise' scheme enabling the project to cross borders rapidly and deliver client objectives.

Environmental Award

Naturaw is a small family business who produce raw pet food. Using only ethical means of getting food, everything is locally sourced, and meat must be human grade. Environmental impact is at the forefront of this business as well as providing the highest quality of food for pets. The company also pushes for a zero plastic policy. The tubs for the meat are FDA approved sugar by product which is not only biodegradable but compostable. The Packaging during transit uses 100% natural sheep wool liners which can be returned and reused for the next order.

SeaGrown was founded in 2018 by Wave Crookes and Laura Robinson, who met on a scientific research ship in the Antarctic and wanted to start a business which combined their marine and scientific skillsets. SeaGrown is now set to establish the UK’s first offshore seaweed farm on a licenced 25 hectare site in the North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast. The company will begin cultivating bulk seaweed in Spring 2020. This highly sustainable super-crop will be used for food products as well as to produce biodegradable plastics, biochemicals, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, soil enhancers and animal feeds.

Bad Bambi Ltd
Bad Bambi is a vintage, retro and pre-loved clothing store that opened on 26th October 2019 in Carlton Lanes, Castleford, as well as having stores on eBay, Depop and a website www.badbambi.co.uk, with a focus on UK mental health. Since opening, they have gone from strength to strength and have just won a prestigious retail partnership with Ward Recycling Group’s textile division WARDrobe, based in Derbyshire, to reduce textile waste within the UK.

Quirky II The Restaurant
Quirky II was established in 2009. Quirky specialise in raw fresh produce from its meats, fish and game birds. Quirky has a national reputation of cooking and serving high quality dishes. They serve around 200 three course meals a week and only have a 660 litre waste bin as they don’t have pre packed food and they recycle glass, waste oil, cardboard, tin and plastic.

Scentiments UK Limited
Scentiments UK Limited is a manufacturing company based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. They are a small family run company providing cosmetic and home fragrance products, made by hand. They work hard to educate the team and customers about reducing the carbon footprint we all leave, through campaigns such as the plastic free campaign that educates customers on why they choose to be plastic free. They also source ingredients from suppliers who are conscious about their carbon footprint.

Motiv Productions create commercial videos and animations for an eclectic client base. With a core team of five creatives and local freelancers, they have managed to build a strong reputation within the industry. From their Studio in the centre of Leeds they are known for creating engaging films with personality and creative flair. Glawning Ltd
This Harrogate husband and wife team invented a glamorous canvas campervan awning that has revolutionised their sector. In 2013 they had a vision for pitching something posh next to their beautiful vintage campervan in order to bid adieu to its nasty nylon awning. When they searched for such an awning it didn’t exist so they carved out their very own niche in the market for what is now well known as ‘the glawning’. This glamorous 100% cotton canvas awning continues to be a total gamechanger for campervanners (UK and further afield) transforming standard camping trips into luxury glamping experiences.

Established on 14th January 2019 Glasshus Facades Ltd(GHF) are a specialist construction subcontractor. They undertake the design, manufacture and installation of Unitised Element Facades at their purpose built facility in Normanton, West Yorkshire. The Business was set up by Managing Director Liam Hourigan and Technical Director Simon Carr who both have 10 years’ experience delivering Unitised Facades in The UAE. Dortech Maintenance
Dortech Maintenance is a commercial glazing – aluminium windows and doors – maintenance firm and forms part of the wider Dortech Group, which has over 25 years’ architectural glazing experience. Power Health Products manufacture health supplements both own label and private label as well as export to over 40 different countries. Set up in 1972 by Mike and Clare McIver, all four of their children have worked at Power Health. Today their daughter Vicky is the Managing Director and works alongside Nick (her brother), Christine (her sister) and Vicky's daughter Stephanie, along with other family members. Within the business there are also other family units. They have also just finished building a brand new factory.

Hopkinson Cycles is a third generation family business, from humble beginnings as a small bicycle repair and sales shop which has grown into a large e-commerce business. Hopkinson Cycles snowballed from local market town trade to global mail order. The Fusco family business began with Violet and Dennis Fusco in a fish and chip shop in Pickering, North Yorkshire in the early 1950’s. The move to Whitby followed in 1968 with the purchase of Royal Fisheries. Their son, Peter and his wife Carol, took over the business in 1979 and purchased Quayside in 1999. Will Chew - Mak Tok
Mak Tok is a Sheffield-based company that makes one of the best Malaysian artisan chilli paste in the UK and possibly the world based on a traditional family recipe. Will started Mak Tok in his tiny kitchen whilst in university with an ambition to, one day, bring Mak Tok into every kitchen and every heart across the world. Today, Mak Tok supplies their award-winning chilli pastes to restaurants and their products can be found in retailers such as Ocado, Booths and selected farm shops across Yorkshire.

Adam Chandler - Reel Film Media Limited
Reel Film Media Ltd is an award-winning Yorkshire-based, video production company, creating powerful, compelling, creative content for leading global brands and small businesses. Strong Life Care Limited
Strong Life Care Limited was founded by Harpreet Banwait. Harpreet took a sabbatical to become the primary carer for his elderly grandfather after the unexpected passing of his grandmother. Harpreet’s family struggled to find a care home for his grandfather that replicated the home environment and one that could meet his needs. It is during this time that Harpreet made the decision to leave his Finance job and set up SLC as he wanted to help other people facing this challenge.

Fortem People Limited
Fortem People are a boutique recruitment, training and consultancy company based in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a converted barn. Established in 2000, Stafflex is a Huddersfield-based recruitment agency that provides thousands of quality workers each year to the education, office, industrial and engineering sectors throughout Yorkshire and beyond. Founded by Brian Stahelin, the company has a full-time team of 22 working from a 3,000 sq ft base close to the town centre. As a family business, Stafflex is committed to playing an active role in the community, supporting 33 charities and good causes over the last 12 months.

Help Locks
Help Locks is a Corgi Fenestration registered home security and locksmith service. Help Locks specialise in burglary reduction, high security locks, Smart security, door and UPVC window repairs and burglary repairs. Help Locks have three community groups on Facebook with over 30,000 members between them. Members share information around burglaries and theft in their area and Help Locks advise best practise throughout the year.

Northern Regeneration
The Construction Skills Village is part of Northern Regeneration CIC. It increases the appeal of construction to people of all ages from 14+ and delivers industry-recognised qualifications. It helps to fill a worrying skills gap - by 2022, another 49,300 workers are required to meet construction demand in the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding areas. The Skills Village differs from a traditional learning environment by offering a real working environment to learn brick-laying, joinery and a full range of construction skills - as well as training in excavator and forward dumper and health and safety.

LiveLead was founded by Jason Kay and Gareth Alexander, two Procurement/Supply Chain experts who through their own experience, client feedback and talking to SME construction businesses realised quickly that there was wealth of opportunity out there for Construction companies but it was difficult and time consuming for them to find what they were actually looking for. They created an Automatic Data Gathering System to display all planning applications and tenders available in the UK in one place. This created an invaluable sales lead system that can be used by many different industries.

BOXT was founded in 2017 by Mel Butler, Alan Dickinson, and Andy Kerr all former executives of Help-Link: along with Keith Jones the former Managing Director of Wolseley's Plumb Centre. Dowsing & Reynolds
Dowsing & Reynolds was launched in 2012 by James Dowsing-Reynolds after wife and future co-owner Ally inspired James to create a concrete lamp similar to one in a magazine. Janet is Art College trained and spent her working career teaching in Universities, Art College and Adult Education, before running her creative business in Hong Kong for 20 years. She returned to UK to start an exciting new farming business with a craft workshop and farm shop. My Baby Can Dance
My Baby Can Dance is a preschool activity based on movement to music and multi-sensory early years learning developing little ones’ physical, cognitive and mental health in a structured friendly equal setting with their parent or care giver. Sheila is an internationally-renowned, pioneering hypnotherapist from East Yorkshire, trading as Sheila Granger Limited. The company, in the most part, supports medico-legal cases, though more and more self-funded families are approaching the company for support, prompting them to begin setting up a charity. The company works to support people who have a range of conditions including Acquired Brain Injury and Cerebral Palsy.

Solupak Ltd
Solupak stands for removal of single use plastic throughout industrial cleaning. They offer solutions that remove conventional chemical systems and the very unnecessary transportation of water around the country. By utilising Solupak cleaning systems substantial carbon savings can be achieved. All products and processes are controlled and developed by Solupak who also own the IP.
